This cartoon celebrates the United States' deportation of 249 (or 250 according to the New York Times) political radicals to Russia. Among those on the passenger list of the USAT Buford were the anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman.

Interestingly, after it was decommissioned, the Buford was used as the abandoned ship in Buster Keaton's film, "The Navigator."

In his time, Harry Langdon was far from underrated. In fact he was considered one of the 4 great comedians of his time, a small pantheon than included Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. However, since his heyday Langdon's star has waned. Perhaps its because his work was more subtle than his peers, or perhaps it was films were not exhibited as often. Whatever the reason, he remains vastly underrated today, though his best work is still quite funny.

Amazing to see how clueless mainstream America was when it came to 80s heavy metal. They focus on the light stuff, Iron Maiden for example, and ignore some of the darker stuff being made at the time. Nonetheless, my favorite part is when the kids are sitting on some steps with their stereo, playing S.O.D. I recognized the riff instantly. What does that say about me?

This Week's Cocktail #4: Limey

Limey

1 jigger light rum
1/2 jigger tripe sec of Cointreau
1/3 jigger Rose's lime juice
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice

Combine ingredients with 1/2 cup shaved ice. Place in blender and blend 10 seconds. Pour into saucer champagne glass or Old Fashioned glass. Garnish with lime twist.

Limey Tonic

Follow instructions above but omit shaved ice; instead shake well with ice and strain over ice cubes into highball glass; fill glass with tonic water.

This is an image of Leon Czolgosz in prison for assassinating President William McKinley. He was influenced by anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Goldman was also arrested and accused of conspring with Czolgosz, though no evidence was found to prove this and she was eventually released.

Nonetheless, Goldman earnestly supported Czolgosz, comparing him to Marcus Junius Brutus, the assassin of Julius Caeser, a comparison that cast McKinley as a tyrant. Goldman derided McKinley as "president of the money kings and trust magnates."

Despite his affiliation with anarchism, Czolgosz was a registered Republican, the same party as President McKinley.

This Week's Cocktail #3: French "95"

French "95"

1 jigger bourbon
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon superfine sugar

Shake ingredients over ice and pour into 10 ounce highball glass; fill with ice and fill up with champagne

French Kiss
1/3 jigger bourbon
1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur
1 lump sugar
Champagne (chilled)

Pour bourbon and maraschino into 8-12 ounce brandy snifter; add sugar lump and muddle to dissolve sugar; fill with chilled champagne.
